Action of active substances Blessed Milk Thistle extract Blessed Milk Thistle has been known in medical practice for more than 2000 years. It was used for treating liver and gall-bladder dysfunction. The complex of flavonoids (sylibanin, sylidianin, sylichristin) is known as sylimarin. It is a biologically active substance extracted from the weeds of Blessed Milk Thistle. Sylimarin structure was first identified by German scientists. They announced that it could effectively improve the functioning of the liver. Usually the extracts of Blessed Milk Thistle are standardized on 70-80 percent of sylimarin. Silymarin decreases hepatic enzymes and bilirubin blood concentrations, stimulates the regeneration of hepatocytes and inhibits the formation of cholesterol stones. Sylimarin neutralizes free radicals, improves the functioning of the liver, inhibits the peroxidation of lipids and proliferation of lymphocytes. It is well tolerated. It detoxicates the toxins that cause liver dysfunction. Sylimarin protects hepatocytes from lesions caused by viruses, ischemia, radiation and iron overdosing. Mechanism of action of Sylimarin 1) Antioxidant – regulates intracellular glutathione concentration, 2) Stabilizer of cells membranes – inhibits the transportation of hepatotoxic substances into hepatocytes, 3) Stimulates the synthesis of ribosome proteins and the proliferation of cells, stimulates the regeneration of liver cells and the formation of new hepatocytes, 4) As the liver dysfunction reducing agent – inhibts the transformation of hepatocytes into myofibroblasts (inhibits the formation of collagen). Vitamin B6 Is important for the detoxicative function of the liver. Vitamins C and E have strong antioxidant properties, bind and neutralize free radicals. Scientific researches demonstrating the efficiency * 36 patients with alcohol induced liver disease were followed for 6 months. First group received silymarin, second group – placebo. The administration of silymarin normalized blood bilirubin, asparagine and alanine aminotransferases concentrations, improved liver hystological indicators. Conclusion: silymarin has hepatoprotective qualities and improves liver function. (Feher J, Deak G, Muzes G, et al. Liver-protective action of silymarin therapy in chronic alcoholic liver diseases. Orv Hetil (HUNGARY) 130:2723-2727; 1989). * Randomized, double blind, placebo controlled study was held with 105 hepatocirrhotic patients. They were treated with silymarin for almost two years. It was noticed that mortality due to the hepatic insufficiency decreased significantly in silymarin group compared to placebo. (Clinical Study 1989). * On the year 1981 a double blind trial was performed with 106 patients with an alcoholic liver disease in Finland. Silymarin was administered to all of them. The blood test and biopsy results revealed that silymarin effectively improved the hepatic function. * Double blind, placebo controlled trail was performed on the year 2000-2002. It determined that administration of silymarin decreased mortality rates due to hepatic cirrhosis and chronic hepatitis, stopped the progression of liver diseases, improved life quality and made it easier to diagnose liver infections. * 14 double blind, placebo controlled trials and 15 randomised trials were held to determine the effect of sylimarin to human's liver. 7 trials showed a strong positive effect of sylimarin to the liver of those with chronic alcoholic liver disease. 4 trials showed a positive effect of sylimarin in people with liver dysfunction. Dosage 1 capsule 2-3 times a day. Literature 1. Feher J, Deak G, Muzes G, et al. Liver-protective action of silymarin therapy in chronic alcoholic liver diseases.
